Checking my setup: i7-7700K, 5GHz core, Corsair H110i, 16x2 RAM, Crucial Balistix Sport 3000 OC, 18-18-18 38 RX 2070 Super 1440p. I’m thinking about upgrading to a 4K 60Hz monitor and an RTX 3080. Will the 3080 boost FPS more than the RX 2070 in 1440p? Also, should I consider a Comet Lake S 10900K and is my 3000MHz RAM CL36 enough?
We'll understand the capabilities of the RTX 3080 once it's announced and we see real benchmark data. If you're thinking about moving to 4K, your 7700K should still work well for gaming. Current Intel CPUs can handle 3000MHz memory, but we can't be sure if newer 10 series chips will gain more from faster speeds. Based on what we've seen so far, it seems unlikely they'd need significantly faster memory to perform optimally, since their designs appear similar.
If the 30 series mirrors the 20 series, it should match the performance of the 2080 Ti. Regarding the CPU, results differ but it's unlikely to cause issues maintaining 60 FPS across most new releases.
