I’m experiencing issues with YouTube on my PC—it feels very laggy and slow now. A year ago it worked perfectly on my laptop, but recently it’s slowed down significantly. I suspect the problem might be related to age or hardware limitations, even though my PC is only three years old. Despite running other programs smoothly, YouTube isn’t performing well. I’ve tried updating Windows, Chrome, and drivers, and even reinstalling Chrome didn’t help. Interestingly, a 10-year-old laptop using an HDD runs much faster than both of my current systems. What’s going on?
Let me know more about your setup. Which graphics card and processor are you running? By "laggy" do you mean the video feels unresponsive or the playback stutters? If it's the former, it might be due to a weak internet connection. If it's the latter, your GPU could be struggling with YouTube’s current codec, causing the CPU to handle decoding instead of the GPU. Right-clicking the video and checking the "Stats for nerds" section can give you useful information.
I'm using Firefox and have faced similar problems with YouTube for several years. There are various factors that could be contributing to these issues. I'm not an expert, but I plan to clear the cache and cookies first. Then I'll disable each extension one by one, as they've previously slowed down website loading. I'm also looking into possible fixes since I haven't fully resolved the problem on my desktop.
Disable the ambient mode setting. My older Core 2 model works fine when turned off.
