I’m starting to understand the more technical side of computers now. I was told by AT&T tech support that my network had been infected with the Koobface worm. The representative suggested paying $200 to remove it remotely. I’m wondering if he was just trying to frighten me into buying something unnecessary or removing it from my PC and Mac. On my PC, I checked the Program Manager and found nothing suspicious running. Also, would using a torrent browser on my Mac reveal an unsecured internet connection? Thank you for your assistance.

If you haven’t got Malwarebytes yet, get it first. Make sure you’ve called the support team. The site mentions Koobface and notes it hasn’t been around much since 2013—check if it’s still safe to use.

Confirming the identity of the caller is essential to ensure it's a genuine representative from AT&T and not a fraudulent attempt.

It's a fraud. Use Malwarebytes for a check if you're concerned.

My wife received a BS number, which is good to know about computers otherwise I would have been tricked by their tactics. It was a number for Click4Support LLC because they had access to my Mac/network, what should I do? The device they accessed is now disconnected from Wi-Fi and turned off.

Avoid any Wi-Fi or network connections to prevent it from joining the botnet. If necessary, completely reset the device by reinstalling a full Windows copy.
