I purchased a real Windows 10 USB activation key from a physical Microsoft store around six years ago. If I swap out the original motherboard, do I still need a new Windows key? Since it’s permanently linked to that board, finding another authentic, physical key can be challenging. There are no more physical Microsoft stores in Houston, so you might want to explore online retailers or authorized resellers for genuine keys. If you’re investing in a real key, getting a factory ISO boot drive would give you the best convenience.

According to what I understand, you can simply use the key you purchased to restore access to Windows.

You can likely use the retail Windows 10 USB to start a fresh installation and reset the system. The activation key isn’t tied to just one motherboard, so it should work across different hardware.

If the system experiences major hardware modifications, Windows may generate a new unique identifier for it, resulting in a loss of activation. Reactivation is possible by simply re-entering the original product key.

According to what I understand, you should be able to restart the system. OEM keys are linked to the specific device they're used on. Retail keys can work on various devices, but only one machine can be activated at a time. Regardless of the method, you can reinstall the same Windows version on the same hardware and reactivate it as many times as needed.

The installation media isn't connected to the activation step, meaning you can download your own via Microsoft's USB creator. The key factor is your license type, and Microsoft suggests linking it to your Microsoft account for easier access to their activation troubleshooter after upgrades.
