Hi everyone,
I'm planning to refresh my gaming rig. I still have a Super Flower Leadex platinum 850w (SF-850F14MP) from 2015 that I'd like to retain if possible.
My goal is a 9800x3d setup with either a used Gainward Phantom GS 4090 (from family) or a brand new 5080 (preferring a palit gamerock OC). The rest of the build will include 2-3 SSDs (1 msata, 1-2 nvme) and I’ll likely skip the HDD. I’ll also have CPU liquid cooling and everything in a Corsair 750d.
As you can imagine, my questions are:
- Will my PSU support the 9800x3d and 4090? I saw it’s a tier A PSU and a guru3d suggested an 850w model for the 4090. In forums, opinions split: some say it’s fine, others warn about getting at least 1000w.
- Have the GPU connectors changed since 2015? I read about new 12v connectors that caused issues on some 4090s.
- I’m leaning toward a used GPU. Is the extra VRAM really worth it compared to saving power with DLSS4 and lower consumption?
Thanks!

It's certainly a very solid PSU and definitely sufficient for the project. However, 10 years is quite a long lifespan for a power supply. This might be something to consider based on its usage.

I’d replace it with a newer PSU since the current one is ten years old and warranty ends even for top models. Also, 4090 performs better overall than 5080, particularly when you need strong power and high VRAM for 4K gaming.

It is suggested to replace the PSU and maintain the existing one as a backup.

I'm in the same situation. The 2016 RM850X needs to be bought soon.

I haven't considered swapping it out due to its age. Once they fail, do they cease completely or could other parts be affected? It's uncertain, around 15-20 hours per week on average. The PC would have been turned off when not in use.

Yes, a failing power supply can affect or even destroy other parts.

What wattage is best for 2025? 1000 or 1200w?

I don’t think even a 5090 would require more than a 1000w psu, perhaps with several GPUs and a very demanding CPU you’d need something stronger.

High quality 1000w units are sufficient.
