I'm trying to manage a PC owned by my uncle that frequently gets viruses. I've cleaned it regularly, but I'm looking for a solution that reduces the need for them to handle maintenance. Something that handles the backend automatically.

Avoid giving him internet access or discouraging him from downloading content. The problem lies in the limitations of antivirus/anti-malware software, which have vulnerabilities and aren't entirely reliable. However, you can configure them to run weekly according to a schedule to reduce the risk of active threats.

Install Avast! and turn on hardened mode. Perfect for those who aren’t very tech-savvy.

It appears many think MalwareBytes functions like a powerful antivirus, but its focus is specifically on malware. It should be seen as a complement to regular protection rather than a complete solution.

Switching the operating system may not resolve the issue, but it will at least block some of the more problematic elements.

Another tool once existed named Hosts anti-PUP/adware. It functioned by preventing access to well-known ad sites and various adware programs through entries in the hosts file, effectively stopping Windows from resolving their DNS addresses. I still employ it for my parents; although it's no longer available, it remains the top-rated hidden virus protection solution I've encountered. It operates entirely behind the scenes without launching any services.

SLS isn't just an antivirus, it's actually a virus removal utility.

Using antivirus and occasional cleanup tools like CCleaner only when accessing the internet or not saving data can lead to a complete reset of the system. This process will restore everything to its original state and erase any files or changes. For a more thorough reset, consider allocating a dedicated partition to preserve essential files if required.
