I’m aiming for a sensible budget, especially since I’m young. For Christmas I’m already thinking about a new bike, but if I upgrade my CPU—currently an i5 at around 3600 MHz—I wonder if switching to an i7 is better or if it’s worth investing in a new motherboard and going AMD instead.

Typically, most titles run smoothly on an i5 3600, though the graphics card plays a bigger role than just preventing lag.

Ivy Bridge performs best with a RX 5500-5600XT or GTX 1660Ti.

I own an Intel Core i5-3600 and my main game is Elite Dangerous. I have a GTX 1050 but haven’t played anything super graphics-heavy lately. The issue of stutters in Task Manager points to the CPU.

I don’t play any games that require a lot of graphics. The one that’s struggling is Elite Dangerous, and Task Manager tells me the issue is with the CPU.

Are you certain about the i5 3600? It doesn’t seem to exist. What motherboard are you referring to?

Are you referring to AMD 5 3600? That model doesn't exist.
