Just ordered Fios, what to expect?
Hello everyone, I just placed an order for Verizon Fios in my new home. Initially, I chose the 100mbps speed and plan to use my own router. I'm wondering about the installation process—will they install the ONT using Ethernet cable or a coaxial connection? I also need to locate a compatible router. Thanks, Ryan.
If no plan exists yet, they'd place a Fios box in the most accessible spot (based on where the fiber enters your home) and lay a coaxial cable to the modem. That's what happened in my house. The details might vary.
I'm worried about that. They'd likely connect the modem with coaxial cable.
It varies. High-speed internet often uses Ethernet, while TV service typically relies on Coaxial cable. FIOS doesn’t seem to provide a dedicated modem; they use an ONT that turns fiber into Ethernet and Coax, with a specific Moca router for the connection. If you’re on Coax, the Moca router must come from Verizon since other providers don’t offer it. You can’t usually find a compatible router elsewhere, though some people try adapters or standard routers—this isn’t officially supported and might not work.
I believe I’ll rent the router from them for about a month, then assess my choices and advocate for ONT since I’ll mainly need internet access. Thanks everyone!
