Hello, on several occasions I've faced an abrupt shutdown while playing Just Cause 3. It usually occurs during intense action sequences involving many explosions, suggesting a possible overload on CPU or GPU. While other games push the system and cause frame drops, this issue is more severe.

I own a Zotac GTX970 with an Intel Core i7-6700K overclocked to 4.4GHz, a Corsair CX600 power supply, and run Windows 10 version 1803. I'm seeking advice on the cause—possibly related to GPU or CPU—and whether there are any reliable (free) tools available for stress testing these components.

What amount of installed RAM do you possess? Based on my knowledge, JC3 typically requires around 12GB. If not, consider changing the GPU drivers.

Hi, thank you. Your system has 16GB of storage, and you've experienced shutdown issues across multiple Nvidia driver updates.

Verify GPU temperatures, recall they might behave oddly at first launch of JC3. Also, reduce texture quality since the 970 lacks ample VRAM.

I'll try it again.
Update: that appears to work; thank you a lot.

How much time can you play the game before it stops?
What are the details of your monitor’s resolution and refresh rate?
Which graphics settings are currently applied in JC3? List each one exactly as shown.
Are you monitoring your temperatures and usage during games? If yes, please take a screenshot for about five minutes while playing.

Hi, thank you for your message. So far, the advice appears to be effective; I adjusted the texture to Very High and then lowered it to High. I was using Fullscreen, 1920x1080 resolution, V-Sync On, 16x Anisotropic, FXAA, Texture High, Water Detail High, Shadow Quality High, LOD Factor High, and all settings enabled. I don’t check temperatures while gaming, but I’m curious if there’s a way to monitor them.

MSI Afterburner is essential for me. I believe the problems stemmed from graphic settings. It's unclear what your monitor's frequency is, but turning off Global Illumination, SSAO and Screen Space Reflections would significantly improve performance. Reducing these effects will lower GPU/CPU load and help manage temperatures. Water Quality is another setting that demands attention; lowering it can boost FPS substantially. The Texture Quality should remain at its highest level. For detailed guidance on JC3 graphics settings, refer to the official NVidia GeForce JC3 Graphics Guide.

The difference lies in texture adjustments for cards with sufficient VRAM to handle maximum performance. This behavior changes if the card lacks adequate resources.

Thanks very much for the tips; loads of stuff to fiddle with.
I have a 60Hz monitor, so as long as I hit 60fps I'm happy.
