Battlefield 2 fans know that Gamespy, the platform hosting its multiplayer servers, ceased operations last year. EA discontinued the online functionality instead of relocating the game to new services, which also ended its presence on platforms like Steam and Origin. Nevertheless, reports suggest some users reaching out to Origin support have received complimentary Origin keys for the game—possibly as EA redistributes its remaining inventory. Despite this, Battlefield 2 remains accessible online, thanks to a dedicated server network built from previously leaked server files. Beyond providing play locations, enthusiasts have developed a custom installer for the game, complete with all necessary components, available for free download. The situation reflects a broader trend of abandonware; the game is no longer published, unavailable for purchase, and EA has been handing out remaining keys. While server numbers are limited—either ranked or unranked—the community hopes increased visibility and free downloads will expand its player base. In my view, Battlefield 2 remains one of the most compelling FPS titles ever released, offering a distinctive gaming experience.

Hey nub, it's true. Battlefield 2 remains one of the top FPS games I've ever enjoyed, and it's cool there are still players around. I might have to try a few matches.

They need to get the installer from the site before using it on their servers. It’s a 3.1 mb file: http://www.battlelog.co/downloads.php

You're asking if you can obtain a game for free from EA.

They have them stored on disks in the basement, and we might set it up again soon.

Consult their support team. Many have mentioned it. I haven't used it myself since I already have it on Steam and Origin. Still, you'd likely need to use the launcher or installer from their site to play online via their servers. It might be better to download it directly from them. If you prefer Origin, reach out to them for availability.
