I've dealt with a mining virus on my system for some time now :/
I've experienced a mining virus on my computer for some time now. I can tell by the significant drop in CPU usage when I open Task Manager—from 100% to under 20%—and by Avast identifying multiple PUPs, including BV Miner: PUP. The process consuming full CPU power is labeled System Interrupts, which can reach 100% and shut down within a second after launching the admin tasks. Despite my efforts, I've done everything possible: a full system reset and reinstalling Windows from a bootable USB just in case. Still, the issue persists. I attempted to run Windows Defender offline, but it always triggers a blue screen. I've tried three different third-party antivirus programs—Malwarebytes, Avast, and Eset—but none resolved the problem. I suspect this isn't a hardware issue since my equipment appears to be in good condition.
Typically, providing complete system specifications helps when seeking guidance.
It seems a fresh installation is necessary. Check your browser extensions and ensure nothing is blocking access. Avoid using the same drive or USB again. Never connect them to other systems. Seek assistance from someone who can download the ISO, use Rufus to create a new bootable drive, install Windows on the new drive, and restart. If the issue persists, investigate what is being installed with your accounts.
Without a full reset, the issue might remain. A complete wipe could have cleared it, otherwise it could be recurring during reinstalls.
It’s a completely new HP 15 - model ay008la, though it’s quite poor quality and the only option my financially struggling student budget allows.
This means essentially the same as Kilrah—after a thorough system reset, no malware should remain. At least until you reinstall the infected software, which you should then be able to detect. Let's confirm that step first. Then review Power Management settings to see your current Windows mode. Also verify if C-states are active in the BIOS. Edited December 12, 2023 by leclod
