I’ve got an i7-9700k and a GTX 1070ti, with an Asus Prime H310-plus motherboard and an 850W power supply. I also have two old hard drives. Honestly, I'm pretty new to all of this and the guy I spoke to said it supports 9th gen Intel, but I’m not convinced it’s running the latest BIOS – it’s showing 2201. Could use some expert advice!

Sure, that mobo supports 9th gen, but it doesn't mean jack if the needed bios isn't already uploaded, and there's no way for you to check it either.
Options:
1)Take the PC to a PC shop - if nearby - and ask them to update the bios for you.
2)Acquire an 8th gen cpu to update the bios with.
3)Return the H310-Plus and get a B365 or Z390 instead. Those are guaranteed to support 9th gen out of the box.

Hey, thanks so much! I was kind of hoping that would be the easiest way, but it looks like the computer store closed down. Thanks again – I’ll really get on that as soon as possible.
