If there are drivers for it sure. But from my understanding the only reason gaming handhelds work is because companies like ASUS install software that allows Windows to be used with a controller (as in navigating the OS). You wont have that for the Steam Machine, because it's not designed to run Windows. Also there is no point in buying a Steam Machine if you're going to install Windows. Just build a small form factor gaming PC.
There are many programs available to manage Windows using a Bluetooth device. Alternatively, you could simply connect a wireless mouse and keyboard. Creating a compact computer isn't feasible for such a small size. Fractal Terra represents one of the tiniest examples, roughly three times its dimensions. For comparable scale, a ready-made mini PC would likely outperform it in visual quality.
I've had a poor experience with Windows and Bluetooth before. Steam OS seems built to function with a controller, while Windows doesn't quite fit, even with third-party apps. It appears Microsoft is constantly introducing issues with Windows 11 through updates. In my view, SteamOS is the key that could really improve this device.
The Steam Machine GPU stands out significantly over the Series S, offering much greater power while its CPU surpasses current-gen consoles. Recent Rockstar titles like GTAV legacy and RDR2 perform well on PC with modest system demands compared to their original hardware. Although both games faced launch issues—such as RDR2’s instability with specific motherboards—their scalability on weaker systems hasn’t been a recurring problem since GTA4. Given Rockstar’s need to optimize the Series S and their track record with efficient PC ports, I believe there’s a more hopeful outlook. Linux support might pose challenges, but from a hardware perspective, many doubt are unwarranted.
