It's time to stop playing on those online games.
So this problem started about a week ago. My internet shows as "connected" even if I try to play games every 20 to 30 minutes, but then I get kicked out of the game. The connection drops after just 10 seconds or so and it doesn't stop music or streaming videos. Usually, once I restart the game, things fix themselves again, but soon enough they break right back up after a short while. I called my ISP two days ago; they came over yesterday, replaced the modem, and checked everything from their end to the modem. They said there were no other issues on the network side.
I tried many common fixes I could find online and still have this problem. Here is what I've done:
- Cycled the power off and back on for both the modem and router.
- Reset the router all the way to its factory settings.
- Tried port forwarding in my router settings.
- Tried different games while playing other ones.
- Swapped the Ethernet cords between the modem/router/pc, switched out another cable to see if it helped.
- Tried both wired and wireless internet connections for the computer.
- Pulled the DNS records and reset my PC's network settings.
- Uninstalled and reinstalled all network adapters and drivers (and restarted the pc before reinstalling).
- Turned off any firewalls on my system.
- Checked for updates in windows, drivers, and other software.
- Made sure IPv4 and IPv6 were set to "obtain IP automatically."
- Disabled the option in my computer settings to turn off network adapters when saving power.
- Repaired the Windows system files to fix any corruption.
I also installed a chrome extension that monitors my internet connection, but here is how it went:

So far, nothing has fixed the issue and it's become really frustrating lol. But I'm pretty sure there is something wrong that I'm missing. Nothing else on my network seems to be affected; for example, anyone watching netflix on the tv downstairs has no problems, and if I have music playing or an app open like discord they will not lose connection.
I appreciate any input on what might be going on and any other possible solutions.
Yes, if your computer is the only thing with this trouble, you've figured it out. Does the driver just disconnect when playing games? Are there other times it drops? You might try sending some repeated pings from another device while doing a stress test on the CPU or GPU to see what happens.
Do you own a modem? Are you using other gadgets connected to it, too? Is this causing internet drops too? Can I get the logs from your modem or router?
I have an EA7450 Linksys router. There are other devices like phones, laptops, and smart TVs nearby, but none of them seem to break when things drop here at the house. Sometimes I get sudden game disconnects while my friend is streaming Netflix on the TV downstairs; even though they stop sending video data, their stream keeps playing. I can check logs from the router, but not from the modem because I only get info on active connections right now—no time stamps or packet details. It just shows which connections are happening at that exact moment, so it doesn't tell me about history or when things went wrong. Update: While watching a video on my phone, I felt like I lost connection for about one to two seconds only.
Actually, you don't know why it's slow. It could be because your internet stopped working or there are too many people using the server at once to watch that video. Also, where is the router? Is it in a spot with good airflow like hanging on a wall near air vents, or is it inside something tight that traps heat?
