In short, my old server is having problems, so I’m planning to upgrade it. Core parts won’t be swapped because they’re not compatible or outdated—like mixing DDR3 and DDR4, or using older Intel vs AMD chips. Most of the hardware is from about six years ago: 240GB SSDs, a 4TB Seagate drive I’m hesitant about, and a spinning hard drive I don’t trust much. (Note: The new setup will be all storage, using several 10TB drives in RAID.)

I’ll use this machine for video editing, storing important files, and browsing the web—including streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Anime, and YouTube. I’m thinking about moving my 3900XT sideways to a new setup, turning it into just a gaming rig with a 5600X and moving the old one to the new machine. I’m open to buying a used Threadripper if it’s quiet enough for my workspace.

I’m replacing a machine that’s over five years old, so I want to keep the new gear for at least five more years. I’m also okay with swapping in a 5950X for rendering and reselling the 3900XT later. If I decide to go with a B550 or X570 board, what kind of case should I use? I’ll likely go with air cooling, probably a Noctua D15 cooler. The GPU options could be an EVGA GTX 980 (from my old rig) or a Vega 64 (quieter but louder).

My rendering usually uses the CPU at full capacity, while the GPU runs at 10–30%. I might upgrade to a 6700XT later if I need more GPU power. Memory will probably be a slow 32GB kit for now, until I can get better Ballistix sticks.
