It seems there might be an issue with WMP. You could try using the Music app instead. I’m on my side regarding this, and it offers a nice notification feature when switching tracks or adjusting volume, even when the app is minimized—just use your keyboard media keys. If you prefer, consider downloading Zune desktop software. It’s free and reliable, featuring a mini-player for your desktop or a full player. The interface runs on GPU acceleration and has an appealing animated design. You can also view it in full screen with a visualization mode.
WMP fulfills all my requirements. When I want to listen to music, I prefer my phone or albums, and WMP meets those needs. I previously used Winamp, but it wasn’t essential for me.
I like things straightforward. Xion has been my favorite media player for a long time.
Microsoft seems unlikely to make WMP the top choice for media playback. In Windows 8 they introduced distinct applications such as Xbox Music and Xbox Video, suggesting a shift away from relying solely on WMP. It appears WMP is mainly useful as a starting point before switching to more popular alternatives.
I've been using Media Monkey for a while now, and it performs well in managing my music files, shuffle options, and other features. You can easily install various skins, such as Foobar 2000, though it may have some limitations in more advanced settings.
iTunes functions well with shuffle features. Honestly, most media players outperform WMP, though that’s just my opinion. Also, the suggestion to use the Zune player seems odd—what a strange idea! A Zune does sound similar, but I might have to go back to 2006.
Consensus reached on the shortcomings of WMP's shuffle feature. Consider testing the Windows Media Player Plus! plugin, which introduces a new shuffle option named Party Shuffle similar to iTunes DJ. This issue can be resolved by setting up an auto playlist containing only the genres you wish to listen to and using that playlist for playback or shuffle. The Party Shuffle also supports custom source playlists—learn more about auto playlists in WMP here.
