I’ve been experiencing stuttering in all games I play. My attempts so far include removing drivers first—uninstalling them via Windows, then using ddu—and checking chipset drivers. I also performed a clean install of Windows multiple times, tried overclocking the GPU and adjusting voltage, kept it at default, enabled and disabled Freesync in the adrenaline app, and disabled SAM, XMP, and fTPM (which actually helped). I also turned off undervolting the CPU and overclocked it. After resetting BIOS and re-downloading the latest version several times, I also disabled MPO. Still nothing works. I’ve replaced all components multiple times, tried various parts, and concluded it’s likely my RAM (it’s quite old), my SSDs (cheap 1TB WD Blue and a 250GB WD Black M.2), or the motherboard. My specs: Ryzen 9 5900X, RX 6900 XT, 3600MHz, x64, Intel i7, ASUS B550, F Gaming motherboard, ASUS THOR 850W Platinum PSU, 250GB WD Black M.2 (for Windows 11 Pro), Corsair H150i 240mm with 3 Corsair case fans.
What titles are you running? Recently some games require more than 16GB of memory, which can lead to stuttering when the system uses the pagefile. Surprisingly, even Fortnite performs well with just 1% low memory at 32GB RAM. Your hardware age doesn’t matter much—DDR4-3600 CL16 remains viable for DDR4, though storage capacity could be a concern.
Fortnite performs best, though I sometimes notice minor lag. Star Wars Battlefield II, BF1, and 2042 also run smoothly.
Check if you're running any additional applications on another screen that might be consuming memory.
I didn't specify your monitor's resolution. The 5900X caused issues with my 6950XT at 1440p. Noticeable frame drops happened during gameplay. I moved to the 5800X3D, which has been smooth on battery life. The overall frame rate is similar, but the tiny and small frames are much more visible. With only 16GB of RAM, adding more memory would help even if you don't upgrade the CPU. Are you using the newest BIOS?
It’s possible the 250GB WD black drive or your Windows setup is the issue. I suggest replacing it with a fresh drive and consider adding a 2x16GB RAM module at 3600MHz for better performance.
The issue lies in the fact that I'm using 1080p resolution while my monitor only supports 144hz, and I expect a smoother experience with a 240hz display soon. When I ran Reason, it showed a 5900x performance because it utilized more cores and threads, which I assumed would reduce bottlenecks.
Its unlikely the issue, I'd say its more likely that 250GB WD black drive's quality/performance. I'm assuming that's a drive you've had for a while and transplanted from another system?
