Hello. You're looking to set up your own hosting business and understand the role of your ASN. Allocation involves assigning unique identifiers for communication, and you can use these to connect with various internet service providers. Yes, you can allocate ASNs to IP addresses from different ISPs.

Sure to be direct, if you’re unfamiliar with an ASN, you probably aren’t set to launch a hosting business—and trying to do so can be quite costly. You’ll find a helpful video that explains this.

The content provides a brief guide on setting up an autonomous system number (ASN) for an ISP or service provider. It explains the process of acquiring IP addresses, registering them with a Regional Internet Registry (RIR), and configuring BGP routing to make your servers accessible globally. The overview highlights challenges like high costs for IPv4, registration fees, and technical requirements for maintaining reliable internet connectivity. It also touches on broader concerns such as server location, uptime, and network stability.

You're right to clarify. It's generally not allowed to assign an ASN to an IP address that isn't your own. Providers typically require ownership or specific authorization for such allocations.

Each IP segment is linked to a particular ASN. Obtaining an ASN requires actual ownership of the IP. ASNs apply to entire address ranges, not just individual entries. There’s no point in needing one if you don’t truly own the IP.
