For regular Bluetooth, the codec needs driver compatibility, not just the adapter. The situation is tricky because both use exclusive proprietary formats. All devices work with standard SBC (low quality), but Windows 10 (version 1803) allows aptX, though LDAC isn't available yet. Android includes LDAC (from Oreo onward) and sometimes aptX iOS supports only AAC. macOS backs both AAC and aptX, while Linux has none. There are specialized adapters that handle encoding in hardware, but they typically only support up to aptX.
