I haven’t heard anyone compliment it. Popularity doesn’t guarantee you’ll like it or grasp the reason behind it. Personally, it feels like a confusing game.

It used to be much better before it became a big deal. Every time you played, things felt risky and unpredictable, and you never really knew what would happen next. There were stories about people being taken and held at gunpoint, forced into fights in a deadly arena, with winners getting rewards and losers losing everything—without realizing how involved you were. Then gaming companies noticed and changed it, turning it into a game where you shoot anyone you see.

DayZ offers an engaging experience with companions, yet my group has shifted to playing Epoch in Arma 3 or trying out various DayZ mods. What excites me about DayZ is the suspense, as opponents can be formidable, particularly in Epoch where constructing a base lets you explore extensively for supplies and weapons. The real challenge comes when others are present—your progress vanishes if you die, but building a base lets you save vehicles, gather resources, and assemble a small team. You can store equipment in lockers and gradually attempt to dominate the server or cooperate with friends. We once created our own bus routes on a busy server, using an armored Humvee armed with a 50-cal gun, moving people along the coast for gold and ammo. It was a strategic effort lasting about ten hours, alternating control while eliminating anyone trying to steal our service. It feels similar to Minecraft in that you craft your own journey, construct your own shelter, scavenge materials, maintain vehicles, and decide whether to fight or help others. You can choose to be a ruthless sniper targeting new players or assist them by rescuing them from bandits. The main draw is the intense challenge, but it’s rewarding when you succeed. The downside is it can feel like a marathon where death is a serious risk, and recovery takes time unless protected. It’s best enjoyed with people who share your passion.

It once felt exciting, but over time the cheaters, the newcomers with basic knowledge, and the persistent bugs start to wear you down. I haven’t played it in... well, maybe a little more than a year, and possibly even longer.
