Hello! I'm setting up my first gaming PC and wanted to know if it's possible to overclock the AMD FX-6300 with an Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 ATX AM3+ board. The board was affordable and had good reviews, though I wasn't planning on overclocking initially. I'm thinking of getting a Hyper 212 Evo for better cooling later. Also, should I invest in the AMD FX-8350? Thanks ahead!

The issue with using the B150 chipset is that you miss out on Hyperthreading, which cuts performance roughly in half compared to the i3. MJ's piece gives a clear explanation if you're interested in reading it: In short, if you need DDR3 support, choose the board I mentioned earlier. You'll notice it costs around $50 more than the Z170 boards that use DDR4. Also, only ASRock fully enables i3 overclocking. If you can swap in your DDR3, I recommend taking the first set of components I listed—it offers much better value. A Skylake i3 with an overclocker provides the best bang for your price around $50.

The LE is inexpensive due to its very weak VRM, making it unsuitable for safe overclocking.

The LE is affordable since it includes a very weak VRM, making it unsuitable for safe overclocking. I’m considering livestreaming my Xbox on Twitch using a capture card and possibly recording while playing light games like Minecraft, LoL, CS:GO, etc. Should I return my motherboard and upgrade it to get better performance or overclock? Also, my case has USB 3.0 headers, but the board doesn’t. I found an attachment that adds the required port.

Is your FX-6300 also exchangeable? I'm asking because it doesn't make sense to invest in a 4-year-old processor when you can obtain a Skylake i3-6100 for the same price, and it performs significantly better than any overclocked AMD model, while you can even boost the i3 further.

your question about the FX-6300's returnability is understandable. I'm considering it because the processor is quite old and not worth the effort. A Skylake i3-6100 would be a better option, as it's cheaper and faster than overclocked AMD models. I haven't placed an order yet; I ordered the motherboard on Amazon, which should allow for returns. For overclocking, I'm looking for a decent price and a good motherboard with USB 3.0 support. Regarding g.skill Ares series, 8GB at 1600 MHz seems sufficient.

diveze :
damric asked if the FX-6300 is also returnable. He mentioned he hasn’t placed an order yet but ordered the motherboard on Amazon, which might allow returns. He’s considering upgrading to a Skylake i3-6100 instead and wants advice on a suitable motherboard for overclocking. He’s looking for something affordable with USB 3.0 support and is curious about G.Skill Ares series 8GB 1600MHz RAM. He recommends an ASRock Z170 board with SKY OC capability, noting it’s the only one offering that feature. He also suggests checking DDR4 if you haven’t ordered yet, or a DDR3 board if you already do. He provided a price list and breakdown for different configurations.

Damric asked if the FX-6300 can be returned. He explains that upgrading to a newer processor like the Skylake i3-6100 is more practical and cost-effective than sticking with an outdated chip, especially since the i3 can also be overclocked. He hasn’t placed the FX-6300 yet but ordered the motherboard on Amazon, which should allow for returns. He’s considering the Skylake i3-6100 and is seeking a suitable motherboard for overclocking—preferring one that offers good value, USB 3.0 support, and a reliable price. He also wants to know if G.Skill Ares series 8GB 1600 MHz RAM is sufficient. He recommends an ASRock Z170 board with "SKY OC" capabilities for i3 overclocking, and suggests checking availability of DDR4 RAM if needed. He mentions a price breakdown and offers links to parts, noting that the DDR3 version would be better if already equipped. He also shares his current purchase link for RAM and expresses interest in a blue case for his build.

The issue with using the B150 chipset is that you miss out on Hyperthreading, which cuts performance in half compared to the i3. MJ's piece gives a clear explanation if you're interested in reading it: In short, if you need DDR3 support, choose the board I mentioned earlier. You'll notice it costs roughly $50 more than the Z170 boards that use DDR4. Also, only ASRock fully enables i3 overclocking. If you can swap in your DDR3, I recommend taking the first set of components I listed—it offers much better value. A Skylake i3 with an overclocker provides the best bang for your price around, within that $50 range.
