I'm getting ready to assist my friend with assembling a new PC in a few days. My knowledge of hardware feels a bit outdated—back then Intel was still the top choice for speed, and AMD offered solid value. However, during the Ryzen era there were some challenges and learning curves. My main concerns are: Is Intel currently offering the fastest consumer CPU? Have the issues with Ryzen largely disappeared? For gaming, what's the optimal CPU from a price-performance standpoint? (Even the most expensive option could be worth considering.) Regarding i9 versus i7, does performance really matter for gaming, or is i7 still the most common choice today? (I didn't encounter i9 during my last build.)

varies based on settings, but it handles both 14700k and 14900k well while using less energy. However, performance may drop in games or apps that rely on caching.

You can game, stream, edit and encode videos on a 7800x3D, all while sipping power. A 14900k will do the last part faster but you'll spend more to cool it and whats a few extra minutes in the grand scheme of things. 3D V-Cache really threw a monkey wrench into things. Now you no longer look at the most expensive chips for the best gaming performance. 7800x3D Gaming? Also 7800x3D Multicore aware prosumer/workstation tasks? Probably a 14900k / 7950x tossup. At that point the difference is essentially meaningless. There is also 7950x3D but I have a hard time justifying the usefulness of that thing, at least personally. Normal people can do all the same things on a 7800x3D, just your encodes, once again, will take a little longer.
