Maybe I'm misunderstanding something or haven't explored newer components much. This gaming motherboard (MSI B250 GAMING PRO CARBON) supports Intel 6-7th generation CPUs and has two standard PCI ports. It's unclear why such older ports would be included on a modern gaming board, especially given its focus on gaming. The only plausible reason seems to be compatibility with specialized hardware for older systems. I hope someone can help clarify this!
They likely ran out of PCIe lanes on the chipset and needed an affordable replacement. PCI doesn’t need a dedicated lane per slot, making it inexpensive to add.
They remain valuable for specific uses. Many excellent PCI-only sound cards exist, which could help someone connect an IDE controller for frequent drive access or devices like a Zip drive. Alternatively, they might have been chosen simply because they were inexpensive and offered an easy solution to fill the gap.
