Issues with XPS 9500 when using Photoshop or Lightroom
Device: Dell XPS 15 (9500) (Laptop) with i7-10750H and GTX 1650 Ti running Windows v1903 (64-bit). When connected, everything functions normally. On battery, enabling both the integrated graphics and discrete GPU causes freezing in Photoshop or Lightroom. Moving the mouse triggers a shutdown prompt, but restarting via Win Key + Ctrl + Shift + B doesn’t resolve the issue. Disabling either the integrated or discrete GPU allows both applications to operate without freezing, even on battery. I’ve cleared all GPU drivers using DDU and tested various configurations—including Dell OEM Intel, NVIDIA Game Ready, and others. In every case, the laptop runs smoothly when plugged in or when only one GPU is active. The GTX card seems unaffected, allowing smooth gaming and video recording on battery. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Situation somewhat settled. After hours of testing and troubleshooting... It seems the Realtek SD card reader is the culprit. When the Realtek SD card driver is installed (without an SD card), the system crashes when Lightroom opens. Why? I’m not sure. What confuses me is that it works fine with media playing (browser or any video/audio) or when the device stays plugged in during charging. After trying around nine different drivers, two proved stable and Lightroom didn’t crash the PC. Technology really is odd.
