Issues with system stuttering and freezing following an RTX 4090 upgrade
I'm struggling to figure out what's going on with my setup. I recently started playing Hogwarts Legacy, but I noticed some strange issues. The NVIDIA overlay reported an input lag of 7000ms, and the system didn’t respond at the title screen even though music kept playing. On Windows, I experience occasional microstutters—sometimes it freezes for a few seconds or just stalls completely without any error messages.
I’ve tried several hardware changes: I upgraded my GPU to an RTX 4090 with MSI Suprim X liquid cooling, used a PCIe 4.0 riser card that worked fine before, and updated my BIOS to 7C84v1F and later to AGESA ComboAM 1.2.0.8. I also installed the latest drivers for GeForce Experience 546.01 and kept Windows 10 with XMP profiles enabled.
My RAM is a 2x16GB kit from G.Skill, and I have a Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD. The power supply is a quiet 1000W unit. Despite these upgrades, the system feels unstable—especially after switching from my RTX 3080 to the new power supply.
I’ve watched some YouTube tutorials, but nothing seems to help. The only clear sign of trouble is when the GPU’s 3D rendering slows down, making it hard to tell which program is causing the freeze. I’m really confused—this isn’t what I expected after all the changes. I’m considering a new motherboard and CPU, but I’m not sure if that will fix the problem.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I'll give it a shot – thanks @ItTakes2ToMango. Updated: tried it, but RAM frequency still reads 2133MHZ. Issue continues – microstutters in CS2, Hogwarts loaded fine, Windows froze completely and I had to restart all within the past 20 minutes.
I didn't want to try it, but I had to remove everything to locate the issue—it was the riser cable. It was a premium PCIe 4.0 cable that worked well with my RTX 3080, but not with the RTX 4090. This caused microstutters, random freezes, and games failing to launch. It was a first-time experience with a riser cable. I hope this assists others in preventing similar problems for a couple of weeks. Thanks to @Robchil and @ItTakes2ToMango for your help—it really made a difference.
