Yesterday I attempted to upload files from my Android tablet to a shared folder on my computer. The process was extremely slow and eventually halted due to a networking error. Interestingly, I can still download files normally. I experimented with disabling file sharing, creating a new shortcut for the shared folder, verifying the credentials, temporarily turning off Windows Defender antivirus and firewall, etc. I'm puzzled about what caused this issue. Anyone has suggestions?

System details: Asus B550-F gaming with Intel i225V, Internet 2.5G Ethernet port, Ryzen 5 5600X, 64 GB RAM (3200 MT/s), SSD WD black NV2 2TB, HDD WD red pro 4TB, Asus Dual 3060ti 8 GB, Windows 10 fully updated. Not enrolled in end-of-life extension program.

Device: Lenovo Wi-Fi 802.11ac running Android 10, file transfer app CX, supports SMBv2 and SMBv3.

You can view the share directly from the Android app by opening it and selecting the desired sharing option.

I faced a comparable problem and resorted to employing third-party tools ("localSend").

I have ample free space—about 60% on the HDD and 40% on the SSD. I’m on the same local network and using the CX File Explorer app. There, I set up a shortcut with my computer’s IP address and login details. It functioned perfectly until yesterday. Files still download fine, but uploads freeze at around 5%, then display a “networking error occurred.” I verified the protocol is SMB3. LocalSend works, though it doesn’t retain file attributes as SMB does by default. I’ll keep it as an alternative option now. EDIT: Discovered a third-party tool that lets me create an SMB share on Windows (on a different port), and the same issue persists. I also confirmed my router settings are correct and device isolation is off. No recent firmware updates have been applied.

I’m weighing whether to reinstall Windows or buy a NAS unit. I know the NAS is the better option but I also damaged two of them last year for unclear reasons. I’ll make sure my backups are current and likely reinstall Windows now. The NAS can wait until the budget arrives. I’m frustrated because I spent a lot testing different setups before setting up an SMB server on my work machine, and all the alternatives had issues. Now I have to start over since Microsoft is again planning to break Windows. Grrrrrr

I turned off SMB direct in Windows features, which slowed the transfer to about 200 kB/s. The process still failed due to a network error. It seems the receive buffer fills up once and then loses track, causing the connection to time out. Anyone have suggestions on how to resolve this?

Consider using another app or uploading to gDrive, then retrieving it on your PC.

I also attempted using AndSMB and MixExplorer, but the results remain consistent. What bothers me is that I can download as many files as I want without issues. However, during uploads, transfers begin and then halt after some time. I’ve done this for small files, but often big files cause delays—sometimes the drive takes an unreasonable amount of time or fails unless I split the file into smaller parts. Appreciate your advice!
