Issues with setting up Arch Linux on a VMWare machine.
I'm completely new to Linux, having spent my whole life on Windows, but I'm excited to dive into this new project! My goal is a clean Arch installation with i3-gaps, so I can set up a nice desktop and start learning Python scripts. Besides Raspbian, I've never worked with Linux before, and the setup looks complicated, though it won't be until I actually power it on. The build is taking time, so I'm practicing on my laptop. I've set up a VMWare Workstation 14 and created a virtual machine from the ISO: archlinux-2018.05.01-x86_64. Am I using the right live image? Is it compatible with VMWare? When I first made it, it asked for an OS, and since Linux wasn't listed, I just selected "Other." That option matters? When I try to boot, it runs a test but then crashes, showing: Error: "(Whatever)" device did not show up after 30 seconds. It prompts me to interact. sh: can't access tty. If anyone has any advice or knows what's happening, I'd really appreciate it! The image is attached below...
Consider another distribution first. Check Antergros for Arch with a good installer. Try UEFI boot in the VM.
Running i3-gaps with custom settings means the setup plays a big role. The environment definitely affects performance. I chose Arch specifically because of my limited understanding of the system from Luke Smith's material.
Antergros is not a sub-distro for Arch like Parabola. You should focus on finding a good installer for it. Also, you're trying to understand the UEFI boot process—good luck with that!
Antergros supports an Arch installation with a GUI installer. I'll give it a shot. Alternatively, consider Debian and Lean Linux first. UEFI boot is typically selected during VM setup.
I resolved the issue by adjusting advanced settings to enable UEFI during VM creation. Since it wasn’t visible, I changed the OS type to Other Linux 4.xx Kernel instead of just Other. The installation went smoothly, and I completed the lengthy manual setup successfully. Appreciate your assistance!
I'm still working through the PC, just testing on a VM inside my laptop. The USB drive has the ISO, but the VM is loading it from my library. I'm curious about what an MD5 hash is.
