Issues with Ryzen 9 3900x speed and efficiency
Recently upgraded from 6700k to 3900X and testing Diablo 3 on VMware. Performance didn’t meet expectations. Running two VMs plus Diablo 3 on the host OS with the old CPU gives 50-80 FPS on D3, with high CPU load. On 3900X it drops to 40-70 FPS (CPU around 30-35%) and with three VMs, D3 falls below 30 FPS while using less than 50% CPU. VMware’s speed stays similar—around 10-20 FPS on D3 across all setups. All systems have the same GTX 1080 Ti, Samsung 950 Pro 500GB NVMe, and 32GB RAM. TUF Gaming X570 with 3900X and G1 Gaming 7 Z170 on 6700k use the same resources (4 cores, 6GB RAM per VM). Anyone know why this happens?
When resolving issues, aim to eliminate uncertainties and pinpoint the root cause. Trying endlessly without clarity wastes time—like searching for a missing driver that harms performance while hardware is absent. This is just one illustration of a potential challenge. On Windows 10, drivers from outdated hardware may still function via services or programs, even if they’re not present physically. It could also be unnecessary software you installed. Review your UEFi configuration: ensure XMP (or DOCP) is set to Profile 1, disable Legacy mode, turn off CSM, enable AHCI for SATA drives, and activate AMD-V and other virtualization features. After a clean installation, verify updates and install the latest drivers—AMD, GPU, etc.—and confirm your power plan aligns with an AMD profile (not high performance). Finally, inspect Device Manager to ensure all hardware is recognized without errors. Test the setup and monitor temperatures to confirm stability.
It's recommended to reinstall the operating system after such modifications.
For Ryzen you should target over 3000 and 3600 is the optimal point before gains slow down.
Could be related to the chipset driver during CPU changes. Windows usually stays tied to the same driver unless you reinstall it. I experienced this when upgrading from an i7 3770K to a Ryzen 7 2700X, and the GPU also stuck with the Microsoft Basic Graphics Driver. After backing up, I had to reinstall Windows.
