Issues with PSU and extension cables
My computer specifications are as follows: R5 5600x, 6600xt, b550 tomahawk, lian li 215, 3 rgb 140mm fans, 2 nvme ssd, 1tb hdd, Cooler Master MWE v2 550w bronze PSU.
I’ve been experiencing a black screen with Kernel power 41 errors randomly, only during gaming or GPU-intensive tasks. After one crash, it would restart repeatedly afterward. It functions normally for browsing and entertainment but not for gaming. This made me suspect a GPU or SSD failure, since the games were stored on the second SSD. When GPU usage increased, the system would shut down due to the Kernel 41 error, possibly damaging the SSD containing the game files. I had to return the SSD three times, receiving a replacement each time. After replacing it, the problem ceased, but the same issue would reappear after 2–4 months. When using the same SSD in another PC, it would trigger a controller error in Event Viewer. Initially, I blamed Gigabyte and considered switching brands.
After four months of using a new SSD without problems, the crash returned again, though this time the SSD wasn’t destroyed by power loss. I had tried everything—RMAing the GPU, testing different motherboards.
Not knowing the root cause, I realized my custom PSU extensions might be the issue. The problems began about a month after installing these cables from Kablemakers in India, a reputable supplier. Removing them and connecting directly to the PSU resolved the issue temporarily. However, over time, bending the extensions could create resistance, causing the problem every 2–4 months. I haven’t heard of similar issues, but it’s possible the cables or extensions were faulty. He offered to send a higher-wattage PSU for testing.
I am experiencing random black screen Kernel power 41 errors while gaming or running GPU-heavy games. After one crash, it continues to occur. It functions normally during regular tasks like browsing and entertainment but fails during gaming. If the system restarts under stress, it may be because:
1) the PSU can't supply enough power when under load
2) there is an overheating problem
I would ask the developer of the extensions about the wire gauge they use. The current unit isn’t ideal; I’d choose a better quality one and a higher wattage model to support my entire rig. Try obtaining a more robust 650W unit and test the sleeved extensions.
It's neither completely accurate nor obviously incorrect. Extending cables might contribute to the issues you're facing. Both choices are viable: improved cables would likely fit your PSU, and upgraded PSUs could work with better cables. Still, it's not fair to single out extension cables as the sole cause.
It seems power wasn't reaching the system properly. The PSU looks okay because after removing the extensions, there were no problems. They use a 16-amp wire. I think upgrading to a more powerful PSU might fix the issue. I just worry about buying another one only to find the extension cables are actually the problem.
