I built my PC last summer and I’m facing issues with downloading and updating games, especially on Steam. The downloads often start at around 90 MB/s but then drop sharply after 10 to 20 seconds, sometimes stopping completely. I see my SSD at 0 or 1% and don’t know if that’s the problem. Internet speed tests show a solid connection around 770 Mbps, but I’m unsure what’s causing the slowdown. It seems to happen mostly on Steam and Riot Games, though it also affects other games. Today it’s worse than usual.
CPU is a 13th Gen Intel Core i5-13600K with GeForce RTX 4070 graphics. RAM is Corsair DDR5 2x16GB 5600, paired with a WD Blue SN570 SSD M.2. Motherboard is ASRock B760M PG Riptide, featuring a 1TB M.2 SSD and Ethernet support with Realtek. All components are designed for gaming performance. Hope this setup works well!
This suggests the SSD might operate more efficiently. A bottleneck could cause maximum performance. If the SSD is faulty, usage percentages lose meaning. When both Riot and Epic provide top speeds, Steam slowdowns are likely not your responsibility. The most likely reason is server overload on Steam platforms, causing delays to accommodate multiple users simultaneously. Another possibility is your ISP intentionally throttling Steam traffic due to network congestion.
For solutions, consider these tips: avoid downloading large files while using Steam before installation. Verify your Steam client shows a location close to your physical address. Check for VPN or antivirus interference that might misrepresent your location. Confirm no download speed restrictions are active in the client settings. If needed, adjust your connection limits or disable them temporarily. Test downloads individually to assess progress. You might also try changing DNS settings to 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 for better routing. Using a VPN can mask your activity from ISP tracking, though it may introduce latency. These steps are generally helpful but don’t guarantee resolution.
