I purchased AOC Q27G3XMN several months back, but soon after I encountered problems that seemed linked to Windows. For about a month, when the system started, the color depth in the Nvidia control panel was set to a low 16-bit value, making all colors appear distorted. I had to repeatedly power off and on the monitor until it stabilized at 32-bit, with other color settings functioning normally. Eventually, I adjusted some display options in Windows, but since then I’ve noticed noticeable issues with color transitions, particularly on darker backgrounds. It looks like this problem has a specific name—something that prevents smooth gradients from appearing to becoming clearly separated instead. I attempted to capture the issue by taking a photo, but it felt oddly unsatisfactory; certain colors, especially reds at the top, appear blurred or smeared, and in Helldivers, the menu sections show sharp, dark edges when opened. I’m unsure what exactly triggered it or how to fix it, as it’s hard to find a clear description online. Additionally, I’m not sure if HDR settings are affecting the display, though they look good in Windows preview videos, but games show much less improvement. Using the RTX HDR mode makes the changes more obvious, sometimes even causing discomfort in my eyes.

To confirm whether the issue lies with Windows or another component, install a Linux distribution on a USB drive using software like Rufus or Ventoy and boot from it. If everything appears correct, restart back into Windows while holding <SHIFT> during the reboot process to enter safe mode. In safe mode, disable display drivers. You may need a utility such as Display Driver Uninstaller to remove them cleanly. After rebooting normally, install the drivers. If the Linux system still encounters problems, the monitor or graphics card is likely faulty—consider swapping one for a working unit and possibly checking the cable connections. Ideally, avoid letting "many months" pass before contacting the manufacturer if the problem persists with the monitor.

It seems the problem is likely on the window side, though it wasn’t before. I’m not sure exactly when it began, maybe when Windows got updated or I adjusted the display settings so my TV mirrors another monitor. This wasn’t an issue before.

Color banding refers to the visible jumps between colors caused by mismatched bit depth settings. It often happens when a higher bit depth signal is sent to a display with lower resolution, such as sending a 10-bit HDR signal to an 8-bit device. Most IPS screens tend to show color banding, but it's not always guaranteed.

Thanks for sharing! It sounds like you were expecting something related to color, but the second word slipped your mind. I’m not sure if it was a monitor problem, since I didn’t notice it before or after. Now it’s really noticeable—like the colors in one menu in Helldivers are huge, surrounded by the screen, and the yellow buttons suddenly stop glowing. I tried a clean DDU install, but it didn’t solve the issue. It seems like the color banding problem is still there, even on other monitors where the colors look better. Maybe something was accidentally changed, but it didn’t fix what you’re experiencing.

I believe I discovered a potential solution. Around July, I purchased this monitor and viewed setup tutorials that suggested boosting contrast in the NVIDIA panel. It appears whatever Windows did, the adjustment was erased, so I didn’t realize it changed. Eventually, I increased the contrast to its highest setting during one of the games where the effect is very apparent—such as in Helldivers, where subtle details become clear only under bright lighting. Furthermore, reinstalling drivers could improve overall color accuracy because when I set contrast to maximum, my red elements in Helldivers turned out much more vivid, revealing intricate details and a rich depth, whereas before they seemed flat and grayed out.
