Issues with 3080 temperature (MSI RTX 3080 VENTUS 3X)
For a while now I've experienced temperatures that seem unusually high on this 3080 (MSI RTX 3080 VENTUS 3X). At first I thought it was due to limited airflow in my setup—it was one of MSI's pre-assembled console PCs. Recently I built a new machine and kept the 3080, but still face high temps during heavy usage. Key components: Corsair 4000D case (default fan configuration so far, one intake, one exhaust), Ryzen 7700x with DeepCool AK620, MSI RTX 3080 VENTUS 3X. Temperatures: GPU stock fan curve, undervolting to 0.85V with max boost at 1815MHz. Ambient around 23°C, GPU idle, fans off at 0% is about 50°C; at 50-70% load it reaches 70-80°C, and with more load fans speed up to 100% (very loud) pushing temps to 85°C and likely causing throttling. I’m considering adding more case fans to improve airflow—already have a 5-pack Arctic P12 in transit, but I’m unsure if that would make a significant difference. It feels like I need to lower settings in many games just to keep load below 80-100% and avoid the annoying noise. This situation is outside warranty, and starting an RMA seems unlikely. But I’m open to trying anything before spending over $1000 on another GPU.
Consider these options:
- Polish the card
- Install additional fans in the case
- Swap out the GPU fan(s) if they’re too noisy at 60%
- Reapply the card and install new thermal pads (ensure they’re suitable and properly thick)
