Issues related to the Model M keyboard?
I've had this device for about 15 years and it has been functioning well until recently. About a year ago, it began having issues with double keystrokes. Occasionally, typing "u" would result in "ui," sometimes it worked, other times it didn't. Then the problem progressed across the keyboard, causing consecutive keys to act together. For example, typing "7" would type "78," and pressing "u" would produce "ui." Typing "j" resulted in "jk," "m" became "m," and a comma turned into ",m." It seems there might be a short circuit or something similar affecting the keys in a row. When I type "6" from the top row, it displays as "6=". After disassembling and cleaning the board with a Q-tip soaked in alcohol, no improvement was noticed. I'm currently using a Razer with green switches, which works fine for now, but I miss my old Model M. Any advice would be appreciated?
If it's a Lexmark or IBM model, you can return it to the original maker for repair at $80 or $100 for conversion to native USB. This is more affordable than some third-party options. Keep in mind that older IBM Model M keyboards consume enough power to actually break the PS/2 standard (even though they were designed by IBM), which is why a dedicated active USB-to-PS/2 adapter is usually required. Without it, you might encounter unusual keypress problems.
