I've had quite a few usb based wifi dongles for a while now, mostly from tp link. However i have observed something strange-whenever i connect some of them (particularly the ones that are somewhat older) to usb 3 ports at the front panel of my pc case ,they don't work properly and i experience frequent disconnections from the internet-also when they do work, connection speeds tend to be slower than normal.
However these adapters work fine when connected to usb 2 ports at the rear of the motherboard. Is there any compatibility issue between wifi adapters and usb 3(esp older ones)? Some wifi adapters that i bought recently do work well even when connected to the front panel usb 3 ports of the cabinet-so this is rather baffling.
If you have any possible explanations for this, please share it here.

If the front panel is your setup and not the rear ports on the motherboard, the problem could lie with your case's front panel or the drivers for your chipset/USB. What is the model of your motherboard and case? What BIOS version is currently active? Which operating system are you using? If you're running Windows 10 or 11, check Device Manager for any warnings with a yellow exclamation mark.

All USB versions function electrically and signal-wise with compatibility, though drivers and the operating system might ask for data from USB3 pins, causing a timeout (in milliseconds) and prompting a shutdown thought. Another chance is USB3 offers more but finer contacts, while USB2 might struggle to form a good connection. Do other devices operate correctly in the same ports?

Yes, USB flash drives connected to those ports function properly.

Motherboard: Gigabyte b460m D3h
Case: Corsair spec 01
Bios version: F4
OS: Windows 10 x64
No problems found in Device Manager.
Wifi adapters with known issues: TP link WN725N, Wn 823 N (these are several years old). A more recent Wn 725n adapter has functioned properly without any issues.

I don’t have the answer, but I’m facing the same problem. My solution is that I’ve probably used many USB extension cables over time. So I connect the cable to the back of the PC, place the other end near the monitor, and plug in the Wi-Fi dongle—I just forget about it. Everything works fine.
I’m aware those small dongles tend to get hot, but mine become extremely warm even when connected to the front panel.
