I possess a USB drive containing a Windows 10 installation and it is genuine. It’s connected to my Microsoft account on my laptop. However, when I log in with the same account, Microsoft requests activation. I attempted updates but am unsure what to do and prefer not to purchase another license. I’m confident the existing one functions properly.

Does the file on your laptop remain enabled? You cannot have it in two locations. It's perfectly fine to use Windows without an activation. Alternatively, you could purchase a low-cost key from eBay, for instance.

It connects to your Microsoft account or traces back to your initial license purchase. If it's an OEM license, the link stays with the device rather than your profile.

Examine this guide: https://www.groovypost.com/howto/transfe...se-new-pc/ Deactivating a Windows 10 license isn’t possible. To transfer it, first remove the license from your current PC. Then move it to another device. This process allows you to use the full license or upgrade from an older version without any restrictions. Microsoft no longer offers deactivation; you must uninstall the product key or use the reset feature in Windows 10. After uninstalling, the license becomes available for transfer. The November Update simplified activation by letting you use keys from Windows 8 or 7 instead of a new purchase. If prompted with “I don’t have a product key,” select it and enter your key when prompted.

Ensure the license is activated on the original PC. Then, connect the other PC to the same network or use USB. Follow the on-screen instructions to install or activate the license on the new device.
