so basically i bought a version of windows to activate my current one for other reasons, but i bought this key from G2A and essentially i get a message saying that it wont activate this version of windows. Does that mean that it is just a dead key ? or does that mean that there is some other version of windows 8.1 that is specific for a 8.1 professional key ? it is a global CD key so it shouldnt be a case of the region any help is much appreciated

You likely receive a Windows 8 activation key that appears similar but isn’t compatible with Windows 8.1. To resolve this, use the Windows 8 installation and update it via the app store to version 8.1.

Have you attempted phone activation using the code? Launch a command prompt by typing 'SLUI 4'

I saved the file from the Microsoft site, including both 8.1 and 8 editions, but the notes indicated the key wouldn't work for those versions.

I thought about it since my brother has a Windows 8.1 disc, maybe the disc holds another version of Windows, allowing me to repair things from there.

Press Windows key + X, then choose 'Command prompt (admin)' from the options. Enter 'SLUI 4' into the box that shows up and press Enter. Continue with the guidance in the next window.

I’ve seen discussions on forums about this. You’re asking if using the Windows keys during a new install or upgrade will affect them. From your experience, it seems working with an 8.1 DVD/USB and the original KMS keys for setup is smooth, even after backing up and installing 8.1 from scratch. I’m confirming what I tried to clarify for you.

it was a description of the seller from Reddit. It seems to come from similar sources, which is why it always includes a warning. I’m not sure, but... in the worst scenario, your key might be invalid (meaning it doesn’t work). I don’t even realize there are many versions of Windows 8.
