My router can switch to modem mode. That way I might be able to get my own router. It's a bit of a hassle, though—I just need WoL for remote PC access.

WOL remains an enigma.
Perhaps a switchbot or fingerbot could help.

I believe you are referring to wake on WAN, which doesn't really exist. There are various programs claiming to enable it, but they often fail after a delay and then stop working. As Kanewolf pointed out, this issue is mainly due to ARP timeout problems. Very few routers support this feature. Wake on LAN operates without IP addresses, only using the machine's MAC address. Any app relying on IP or port numbers isn't a real wake on LAN solution. Furthermore, WOL generally performs poorly. It often needs repeated packet sending. Microsoft has also been affecting this concept, and BIOS developers favor Microsoft's version of waking devices. Frequently, Microsoft resets the BIOS settings if you don't select the right options during shutdown. Ultimately, I would steer clear of this problem. Consider using a smart power plug—many of them can be accessed outside your home. Then use the boot on power restore feature, which usually works very reliably.

It seems that your idea is quite accurate. Thank you all for the guidance. I think the smart plugs should be the simplest option to consider.

This post is about acquiring a TP Link TAPO P100 Smart Plug for £8.99 at Curry's / PC World. It works well, I changed the AC setting to "Always On" in BIOS and set up a smart action via the TAPO app that powers off, waits 30 seconds, then restarts the PC, effectively performing a full power cycle. A useful fix for Wake on LAN at a low cost.
