I purchased the Asus Z690-E board and noticed a warning about x8 performance when using certain devices. The Asus Hero Z690 supports two PCIe 5.0 lanes, and they explained that with a ROG Hyper M.2 card in the first slot, the second slot will only support x8. If you install a ROG Hyper M.2 card in the second slot, the first slot will still be x8. They also mentioned that using a Samsung 980 Pro in the top M.2 slot would allow x16 performance. Your setup with a PCIe 4.0 card might affect the results, but it’s worth checking the specific slot configuration.

According to the manual, placing an M.2 drive in the top slot will make the top x16 slot function as x8. The lower two x16 slots are physically x4, but they operate as x4 electrically. The bottom slot can switch to x4/x4 mode with the ROG Hyper M.2 card, which is listed in the package details.

Your setup depends on how the slots are arranged. Installing the SSD in the bottom M.2 slot doesn’t affect the top PCIe 5.0 GPU slot’s size, as long as there’s enough space and proper alignment.

The remaining M2 ports shouldn't affect the top x16 slot, so everything should work fine

Got it, I'll choose one of the lower M.2 slots. Appreciate the details!
