My mother's Dell Latitude 5580 has been affected by a charging issue. She attempted to use a DJI Phantom 3 charger instead of the Dell charger, which caused the smoke to escape. Although the laptop still functions, it fails to charge properly. The Dell charger supplies 19.5V while the Phantom 3 provides 17.4V. I’m unsure why this discrepancy led to overheating, but it did happen. After disassembling the device, I suspect a component was damaged—specifically, the 3-legged SMD PD4 appears burnt. The surrounding parts seem to have overheated, though I’m hopeful they’re still usable. If I locate the correct replacement part, I’d like to try swapping it myself. I’ve seen a discussion on the Dell Form about this problem, but it seems to apply to a different model. In one photo from that post, the text above the working PD4 reads “CC6 76.” I haven’t managed to find a matching part number there. My unit’s part number likely starts with an R, so I’m not certain if it matches the one on the form. Any guidance on identifying this component would be invaluable. I’ve attached pictures of the damaged board to share. To put it all together, we recently replaced the laptop and cleared all data. If I can get it back online successfully, it would be a big win. But if I end up bricking it during the process, I’m not willing to risk it, so I’m open to handling the repair myself instead of sending it to a shop.
The PD4 signifies it functions as a diode, similar to the PD5 which has a more robust Schottky diode. It's hard to determine precise specifications for the PD4 component. With numerous inductors and MOSFETs nearby, it likely belongs to an on-board DC-to-DC converter.

PD4 serves as an ESD protection component. It's designed to safeguard against electrostatic discharge.
