I mean, compressed air is the only thing I'd usually interact with a motherboard. Even light brushing can cause static electricity that might harm the board.

Remove the heatsinks and CMOS battery. Clear the CMOS and short the power button for two minutes. Rinse thoroughly with water, making sure all components are wet. Submerge in a bucket of water for about an hour, or use the dishwasher if possible without detergent. Allow to dry for a day or two, depending on the environment—some dirt may have settled and now the board won’t power on fully. A thorough soak should resolve the issue, as this method has previously worked for me. All proof has been removed.

Remove the heatsinks and CMOS battery. Clear the CMOS and short the power button for two minutes. Rinse thoroughly with water, making sure all components are wet. Submerge in a bucket of water for about an hour, or use the dishwasher if possible without detergent. Allow to dry for a day or two, depending on the environment—some dirt may have settled and now the board won’t power on fully. A thorough soak should resolve the issue, as this method has previously worked for me. All proof has been removed.

It's okay to use a soap tab sometimes, as it can help eliminate stubborn residue that water alone can't remove. If you don't have one, a small amount of Dawn dish soap works as well—just be careful not to use too much or you'll end up with a messy floor. Let me share how I learned this.

Before inserting it, take out the CMOS battery and if your board has pins secured in the socket, use a cover or protector. This prevents the water jets from moving or bending the pins. For chip boards with pins on the chips, you don't need special prep. Usually, I keep it with the lock lever slightly open to allow cleaning into the socket and clean the fingers underneath.

Make sure to run your dishwasher on the Pots & Pans cycle with hot water for thorough cleaning, and use the extended rinse cycle. Skip the heated dry if your machine has one; just remove it after wash and rinse. Once done, take the board out, drain it, and let it air dry for at least a few days in front of a fan—even a small one on low works.

I recently cleaned a Sabertooth R 3.0, and after letting it sit under my ceiling fan for a couple of days, it came out spotless. It started up without problems and is now running smoothly.

It had random shutdowns, I rinsed it five times, but since I didn’t cover the socket after leaving it for months, I left it exposed. I’ve avoided hitting the socket from the side, though direct hits from above are fine. It dries quickly—about a day in a room without air conditioning, just lay it against a wall and place a tissue on the corner to soak up moisture. This helps check if it’s dry. You should shake the boards well before drying to remove excess water, which speeds up the process. I’m thinking about getting an ultrasonic cleaner or a hotbox for better results.

Be mindful of the conditions, as overheating is a risk. Just ensure the internal air stays warm or hot, not scorching. Air circulation plays a bigger role in drying than temperature alone, though heat assists. When the average inside temperature reaches around 50°C, it works well for drying without damaging components. Temperatures above 65°C should be avoided since hardware can absorb more heat than it displays. Remember, excessive airflow combined with heat increases temperature further—keep the airflow moderate if you feel it.
