Issue with the Dell Inspiron lid removal
I own a Dell Inspiron 15 3000 that I purchased new a while back. It was initially connected to two external monitors and the laptop lid was always closed. About a month later I noticed the lid was coming off and stopped using it. Even though the laptop functions perfectly, it became unstable because it was hanging by a thread. It seems the heat caused the lid to melt or detach. I’m wondering if anyone knows where to take it for repair so I don’t have to buy a new one, and I definitely won’t spend too much on fixing it. Here are some pictures:
It doesn't seem like the damage was simply from melting. Still, you might be able to locate a suitable replacement hinge kit for the laptop. Reaching out to Dell or conducting some research could help you find the necessary part numbers for the assembly or components, depending on the model.
You can remove the screen if you're using it as a desktop setup—it will prompt a diagnostic when powered on that asks you to press enter to proceed into boot mode. Be aware that the wireless antenna is positioned around the screen in the case, so keeping it intact is important for WiFi and BT connectivity if available.
I disassembled one that had been damaged and repurposed it as a workstation. I used a VESA mount designed for two parts, allowing me to detach it from the back of an inexpensive TV I had attached. I also repurposed a leftover antenna from an old router, drilling out the Kensington lock to secure it into the existing wiring. It functioned just as intended.
From my observations, unless you can obtain those components at a very low cost, it hasn't always been worth the effort to replace the entire lid and screen when both are compromised. There are many well-made refurbished units available, especially in business-class models. Prices on W11 models have been gradually increasing over time.
Thank you for your thoughtful feedback. I’m really confused about what happened. We were always connected to two external monitors and the lid was closed except when we turned on the laptop. One day we noticed it looked damaged and since then it’s been getting worse every time we use it. It seems like someone might have harmed it, and I’m just as puzzled as you are. I’ll keep checking how much it will cost to replace the parts and decide. Thank you for your support.
