I want to duplicate my hard drive to a larger one. I purchased a new Crucial MX500 2.5" SSD and assumed connecting it via a USB or SATA cable would work just like an external drive, allowing me to clone it. However, nothing happens when I plug it in. This cable has worked before with another drive (now unavailable), though my tech-savvy friend used it successfully—unclear if they adjusted the mounting. I also used a 2.5" SSD USB enclosure and that didn’t help, along with two older 2.5" drives that function properly. Apart from feeling the mechanical movement when inserting one, nothing else works. Do I need a powered enclosure? Is the 5V from a USB port sufficient? Should I mount it somehow and follow specific steps? I first tried on a laptop, then on a PC running Windows 10, both with no success. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

which adapter cable are you using precisely? you can take a photo and upload it to imgur.com or similar, then share the link. is it USB3.0 or USB2.0? does the cable include a power connector or two USB plugs? can you observe the external drive in the disk management tool of windows? https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-open-dis...nt-2626080
