Issue with Seasonic PSU after startup failure – assistance needed.
Playing with a fresh Vertex GX 1200 for months and one night during peak usage caused my old CRT screen to go dark abruptly—just a flash from black to white and the machine shut down. The motherboard still showed some RGB light, but I planned to investigate later. Two days on, I tried turning it on via the case power button; nothing happened. After switching off the PSU, enabling power-saving mode, and restarting, I heard a brief pop. When I pressed the power button again, it produced a loud burst sound. I removed the PSU and discovered a damaged grey component. I filed a return, paid $30 for shipping, and received a refurbished unit with the new PCIe slot. I reconnected it using the same cables and got the same sudden buzz or snap, but the system failed to power up. I’m hesitant to attempt another power cycle since I don’t want another PSU failure. Here are the full specs: CPU – AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D (upgraded May), Motherboard – Gigabyte X870E Aorus Pro AM5 (ATX, upgraded May), RAM – Crucial Pro 64GB DDR5 CL40 (2×32GB, upgraded May), GPU – ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3090, Case – Phanteks ETHOO Pro 2, AIO cooler – NZXT Kraken 420mm RGB v2 liquid, Case fans – all slots filled with 120mm/140mm Noctua fans, PSU – Seasonic GX 1200W Vertex (upgraded May), UPS – CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD PFC Sinewave, OS – Windows 11 64-bit.
Sounds like there is a fault, likely with the mobo. Stop breaking PSUs by plugging them into it! This is a thing you have now learned - repeating it is literally crazy. If you are lucky, the new PSU might have protected itself, or you can get away with returning it as DOA. If it were me, I'd replace the mobo and cross all fingers and toes that it wasn't something more expensive that broke and the PC now works.
It seems I didn’t receive the package yet. I’m checking to see if it’s the MOBO version before sending it to Aorus.
