Issue with RTX 3090 overheating or malfunctioning.
Hey, your computer stopped working after intense gaming. The motherboard displayed a red light, the GPU light was off, but the fan was running. After checking the manufacturer's site, it seemed there was an issue with the GPU. I reset the PC and waited a while; then I ran a stress test and everything worked afterward. On the second attempt, the system froze, and Windows reliability showed error codes 141-117. After another stress test, it passed. How can I be sure it was the GPU? Your setup includes an AMD Ryzen 3700X, 16GB RAM, 3200MHz CPU, 1TB NVMe SSD, an 80+ Gold PSU from Antec, and an RTX 3090 FE with B450 Auras Elite.
Thanks, the situation sounds manageable. The system handles around 650-700W without issues, and I've been using it for over a year with heavy tasks like Unity and Blender. I think the problem isn't power spikes but temperature spikes—memory would jump to 102 and crash only under stress, like during stress tests or games. Yesterday it worked perfectly, no damage observed. The blue screen was the last thing I noticed.
Something comparable to an HD5450 or GT210 from eBay might work if you're open to it, though I get that it might not be your case. My main worry isn't the long-term power draw of the setup (since PSU picks come from Nvidia), but rather the sudden spikes in power usage when the system first boots, which can sometimes overload certain power supplies. If you haven’t experienced any issues in over a year, it’s likely not the issue. The return to normal behavior is surprising, so consider checking the connections and cables near the GPU. Unless everything seems fine, I wouldn’t stress too much since pinpointing the problem is already difficult.
It seems the GPU is malfunctioning, which matches a common failure pattern. A black screen with fans running indicates an issue, but rebooting resolves it. If the PSU was overloading, it would have cut power entirely. I tested a 3090/5800X on a 750W PSU for two years and it performed well, though it was a bit noisy. The PSU is high quality, so power rating alone isn't enough. Could you verify if the system remains active without the screen going dark?
Thank you. The system is running on the fans, everything functions properly except the RGB lights on the GPU which are off while the fan spins and the VGA shows a red light. He didn’t allow me to boot it, but after about five minutes it started working correctly. Regarding resetting the cales, it seems to be working now only when I’m not playing games. If I start a game or run a stress test, it crashes again.
No Kill-A-Watt device will ever detect this since they aren't that responsive. The machine freezes and restarts, freezing on a VGA LED? Sounds like a graphics card issue and requires a return merchandise authorization. This happened to my 6900XT, and it was the card that failed.
yeah, i know, but obviously there's a way to measure it... prob need some "pro equipment" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ as for, uh, the issue on hand, 700w usage + 100 to 200w "spikes" could easily trigger some protections on less than ideal power supplies, just something that shouldn't be dismissed (and also this can happen under no load too, just certain spikes can be enough to trigger the protection as psu will see this and think "uh, oh, better shut it down!" )
Absolutely, that's correct. There are additional factors to take into account, along with some clarification needed from the user. This power supply aligns well with the PSU Tier List for stable operation, capable of managing sudden power fluctuations. It seems the reference was about "reseating cables," which means disconnecting and reconnecting the power cords fully.
