Issue with Riot Games only on this platform
Since August 2020 my brother provided me with all his old parts because mine were deteriorating rapidly. I upgraded from an AMD FX-8320 black edition to an Intel i5-2400, 8 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage, and his motherboard—though I wasn't sure about it. Over time, due to overheating issues, I've experienced frequent freezes in Riot Games, especially during League of Legends matches. These freezes occur right after the champion select screen, when the client closes and the game attempts to launch, causing the PC to shut down completely. This has made my season start very difficult, as I struggled to maintain my ranking and faced penalties for AFK behavior in many games. My hard drive would fail to boot quickly, leading to frequent reinstallations. Eventually, I switched to Valorant thinking it was a LoL issue, but it turned out differently. After completing the tutorial, the game would freeze repeatedly right after the "warning - epilepsy" message appeared.
I've tried numerous solutions:
- Swapped all four RAM sticks at some point, leaving only two, which would freeze the system.
- Disconnected my HDD and connected my brother's SSD, but freezing persisted on both drives.
- Reinstalled League of Legends multiple times (6-7 times), and the same with Valorant.
- Played other games for extended periods, including Sea of Thieves (20+ hours), Minecraft (15+ hours), and World of Warcraft (10+ hours).
- Monitored temperatures during gameplay; my PC never exceeded 60°C, except for Sea of Thieves occasionally reaching 65°C.
- Updated GPU drivers, ran tests on the GPU and CPU, changed the SATA cable and slot in the motherboard, updated Windows 10 to the latest version, and even replaced the battery in the motherboard.
Current specs:
- CPU: Intel i5-2400
- RAM: 16 GB DDR3 at 1333 MHz
- GPU: EVGA GTX 960 4GB SSC
- Motherboard: Asus P8H67-M Evo
- OS: Windows 10 (latest)
- Notes:
- I don’t have 360 security (noted on Reddit as a potential cause for Valorant issues).
- The problem seems to occur only with these two games; I haven’t tried other Riot titles like Legends of Runeterra yet.
- There’s no consistent pattern—freezes happen randomly, sometimes over 30 times since November, with unpredictable shutdowns.
- A friend suggested it might be a software issue, though they don’t know for sure. They haven’t experienced similar issues before.
If you have any suggestions or want to discuss further, feel free to share. I’ll do my best to help.
Welcome to the forums, newcomer! Could you verify the BIOS version on your motherboard? Have you reinstalled the operating system after moving to the pseudo new parts? Did you reinstall after using Windows Media Creation Tools to create the installer? For context, which OS version are you currently running? Are all the RAM sticks in your build identical in make and model? What is the make and model of your PSU, and how old is it?
Image of my system details
I didn't reinstall the OS, and I wasn't even familiar with Windows Media Creation Tools. My current version is 20H2 (OS Build 19042.804). At one point, when I had only two RAM sticks—both Kingston's HyperX Fury 4GB—they were mixed up, and I don’t know the branding of the other two.
