Issue with PSU troubleshooting: activates using paperclip, fails to boot.
From the title I have an 850 Evga PSU that passes the clip test. It maintains proper voltages even without load. When jump starting it, a loud audible click is heard, indicating the switch is engaged, and the fan seems to hesitate before stabilizing at a low consistent speed. After jump starting while connected to the board, the decorative LEDs illuminate but no other functions operate. My feeling is it’s entering a low-power mode, but I’m not sure. Any suggestions on inspecting the PSU inside would be greatly appreciated!
MSI Z390m motherboard is ready.
CPU: I7 8770k
GPU: GTX 1070
RAM: Gskill trident DDR4 16GB (2x8)
Display: Evga 850 gold + supernova PSU
Connections: All pins are properly seated, including the 24-pin ATX for the board and the 8-pin CPU.
Alternative setup: 500W PSU, but it’s not compatible with the new board.
Power supply: AT type, 12-hole 11-pin connector, includes two 12V rails (8 pins each) and a 4-pin rail.
Goal: Confirm compatibility with Z390 LMC or rule out the board.
The 500w psu is part of an OEM proprietary system. If not standard ATX, it may not function properly.
the audible click likely indicates the psu activating the fan, possibly due to load or temperature conditions. the regulator might also be shutting down the psu to avoid voltage damage. alternatively, removing the gpu and connecting it to the integrated graphics could help determine if the issue is related to a faulty 12v line.
