You may choose RFC 1918 addresses such as 172.16.0.1 for pfSense. Configure a DHCP range from 172.16.0.100 to 172.16.0.200 to provide ample subnet space for static IP assignments.

After configuring the LAN IP through the pfSense interface, verify that your local switch is linked to it. Connect another device to the switch and assign its IP address accordingly. Then configure your local machine with the following settings: IP - 172.16.0.2, Subnet - 255.255.255.0, Gateway - 172.16.0.1, Primary DNS - 172.16.0.1, Secondary DNS - blank. Open a web browser and enter https://172.16.0.1 or http://172.16.0.1 to access pfSense.

You’ve started your router and setup—great move! For strong security, consider turning on WPA3 encryption, enabling a strong password, and disabling remote management unless necessary. On your Quanta switch, keep its default settings for LAN and disable any unused services to reduce exposure. No major features need disabling unless you’re targeting specific risks.

pfSense comes with tight defaults, meaning you don’t have to turn on any features for strong protection.
