Hello, I hope this message finds you well. My system includes an RTX 3080 12GB, a Ryzen 9 5900X, a 500GB SSD, an ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F gaming motherboard, a 850W power supply, and 32GB of RAM. I’ve installed the newest drivers for everything, at least according to my understanding. Most games run smoothly except for occasional stutters that don’t really affect me. My question is: when playing performance mode in Fortnite with the lowest settings, I experience inconsistent FPS and some tough stutters during fights. My CPU temperature reaches around 73°C, possibly even with the default AMD cooler. Could it be that my cooler isn’t sufficient, or is there another factor at play? Thank you very much for your help.
73c stays within safe temperature ranges and won’t lead to performance drops. I noted you’re using the standard AMD cooler, while the 5900x doesn’t include a built-in one. What’s actually in your setup?
I received the stock cooler that came with the AMD Ryzen 5 3600X, which is an AMD Wraith Stealth model.
Limit your frame rate to match your screen's refresh speed. It's impossible to display anything faster.
The 5900X on an AMD cooler is really not helping your setup! For FPS gamers, the 5700X3D would perform much better, and the older cooler might still function okay.
The CPU is showing strong thermal throttling, which would cause it to run much hotter than the 73°C threshold. The Wraith Stealth cooler is rated at 65W, not enough for the 5900X. Max power output stays at 5700X3D’s peak under all cores when loaded, but gaming performance drops below half that level. The unusual 140W figure also appears as the non-OC PPT for a 5900X, though it operates more efficiently around 200W—then climbs to 230W, though much of that is lost as waste.
