I wasn't aware of PSUs losing capacity, that's important information but if it's accurate then my PSU's real power should be about 200W (since it's 12 years old). Why would my PC not crash during stress tests if I run multiple parts at once? Shouldn't it shut down when power usage spikes? Nothing seems to happen. Doesn't this suggest the PC is being powered properly, since I've never seen it turn off or experience BSODs before?
The key question is whether electricity reaching the PC ever stops (due to a switch button, outage, etc.) after the issue occurs once more only when power goes out again. When the DVD player makes a loud noise, I wanted to demonstrate this and check if the PSU is deteriorating, as it hasn't happened in the past 12 years.
I've already tested voltages with an ammeter and used some PC monitoring software. What else does a PSU tester do? Something seems off but everything still looks normal, which is confusing.
the psu tester checks all the rails to confirm they operate at the correct voltage, such as the gpu leads, ensuring each reads the necessary voltage during every light except for the -5v which indicates a good PSU. the system remains stable so far because the processor and GPU naturally reduce their clock speed when power is insufficient. most stress tests evaluate components individually, which may explain why some prefer CPU over GPU. if either the CPU or GPU experiences a power surge, it will slow down to conserve energy. a sudden shutdown could result from the CPU or GPU exceeding its capacity under high power demand. random power interruptions might compromise the PSU’s overvoltage safeguards, turning the system into a fire risk. another factor is the ability of some power supplies to handle temporary spikes—up to 460w bursts are possible without immediate failure, though this risks triggering protection mechanisms and shutting down. it's worth noting that most PSUs exceed their rated capacity, so a 460w draw could temporarily draw more than expected, which is not ideal.
