Issue with PC activation when using 3070 connection
Issue with PC activation when using 3070 connection
Old Configuration:
- i7 12700F processor
- 16GB DDR4 memory
- Gigabyte B660m motherboard
- Gigabyte P750GM (the notorious model prone to failure)
- Gigabyte RTX 3070 (8 pin + 6 pin)
Updated Components (replaced parts):
- Gigabyte B760m motherboard
- 32GB DDR5 RAM
- Corsair HX850 memory controller
- GTX 960 graphics card (still present)
Background Info:
I assembled this system in February 2022. It operated smoothly for an entire year, allowing me to play games without any problems. By February 2023, it began shutting down immediately with just a single button press. Eventually, it would power on only when the power button was rapidly pressed or held—what I later called brute force. After two weeks, the machine stopped working entirely.
Initially, I suspected the power supply unit might be dead, so I swapped it for the Corsair HX850. Still, it wouldn’t start. Further testing revealed that the system would boot up if the 3070 was removed. However, since I’m using an Intel processor without a dedicated GPU, I can’t run games.
I’ve kept the GTX 960 from my previous PC working, so I’m still using it to maintain functionality. It consumes about 120 watts and draws power via a single 6-pin connector.
I attempted to return the 3070 to the seller, who confirmed it functions properly. Testing it on my old system also showed it worked correctly. Recently, I tried another repair—swapping in a new motherboard and RAM—but still faced the same issue.
My main concern remains whether the CPU itself is hindering startup or if the GPU is the culprit.
I’ve tried the following:
- Switched power connectors (including PSU connectors and power cords)
- Reseated or replaced RAM
- Updated motherboards
- Replaced PSU
- Inspected the case’s power switch
- Installed the 3070 in a PCIe 3.0 slot
None of these resolved the problem. My PC fails to start regardless of the GPU connected, but it does when the GTX 960 is present.
Any assistance, technical advice, or further ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Is this your setup?
Gigabyte RTX 3070 (8 pin + 6 pin)
Which model from Gigabyte are you using?
A GTX960 would need significantly less power than an RTX3070. Are you certain the power connectors are properly connected on your PSU and components?
Curious to know if you reinstalled your OS after swapping the motherboard?
I'm currently using this HX850.
It comes with the Gigabyte RTX 3070 GAMING OC 8G (LHR version).
I verified all the connectors and even tested a different one from my new PSU's box.
I haven't reinstalled my OS yet. I didn't think about software or BIOS problems because it won't even start. It seems like a hardware problem, mainly related to power consumption.
And I will inquire about "Changed power connectors (PSU power connectors as well as the power cord)". Did you only use the cables that came with the new HX850 PSU? Also verify all the front case connections...
At first, I kept using the old power cables from my Gigabyte PSU since switching to new ones would disrupt my cable setup. Eventually, I switched everything to the cables from my Corsair PSU, but it didn't make a difference. I also verified the circuitry on my front panel and connectors, and everything seems fine. My PC is now working properly (though not with the RTX 3070).
